Nanoscale friction slides downwards
Abstract:
Researchers at the University of Basel have found that an atomic-force microscope tip dragged across a surface will change from a “stick-slip” sliding mode to continuous sliding if the normal load on the tip is low enough. The continuous sliding regime has ultralow friction. “The understanding and control of friction has been a great challenge for a long time,” Anisoara Socoliuc of the University of Basel told nanotechweb.org.
