Write off CMOS at your peril
Abstract:
The microelectronics industry is facing two well known dilemmas. First, the cost of new fabs keeps on increasing according to Rock’s Law, which states that fab construction costs double every four years. Currently a facility costs around $2-3 bn. Second, chip manufacturers’ addiction to Moore’s Law is forcing them to keep increasing the scale of integration - packing more and more devices onto smaller areas running at higher clock speeds. Somewhere something has to give, and the industry is already feeling the strain.
