University has to battle for academic stars
Abstract:
Every few months, it seems, the University of Alberta holds a news conference to announce the latest high-profile addition to its science faculty. There was Rolbert Wolkow, who created the world's first self-assembling nano-wires at the National Research Council in Ottawa. He remains active with the NRC there while heading up a $10-million nanotechnology research program here. The creation of the National Institute for Nanotechnology at the U of A played a role in bringing Wolkow here along with two top American recruits - the husband and wife team of Jillian Buriak and Hicham Feniri - in the chemistry end of nanotechnology.
