Keeping nanoshuttles on track
Abstract:
A new way of guiding 'molecular trains' powered by biological motor proteins makes it impossible for them to jump tracks - a problem that has hampered earlier studies of these bio-inspired nanodevices. Henry Hess of the University of Washington in Seattle and co-workers have found a design for micrometre-scale channels that entrap the 'trains' securely and prevent them from climbing out. They give the channel walls pronounced overhangs: the "logical conclusion", say the researchers, of attempts to reduce such escapes by making the walls steeper
