Molecular electronics flips out

Abstract:
Can individual molecules really function as electronic switches? Experiments have provided tantalizing clues, but it can be hard to know what is going on at the molecular level. Two researchers have now shown that, in theory, a single, small organic molecule can be switched between two states with different electrical conductivity when wedged between a metal surface and the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope.
