Nanocoils spring into place

Abstract:
Researchers from Northwestern University, US, and Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, have tested the mechanics of a carbon nanocoil. The coil, which was just a few microns long, behaved like an elastic spring. ... the coils could have applications as tiny springs in nano and microelectromechanical systems, or as filler material for an elastomer composite, which would make the elastomer (rubber) significantly stiffer but still able to undergo large extension.
