In brief: High-speed domains

Abstract:
The speed at which the magnetic domains of a material can switch is strongly affected by the speed at which their respective domain walls can move. Fortunately, new research suggests that this speed is not adversely affected by the physical confinement that results when magnetic devices are reduced to nanometre scales.
