In fall 2002, the Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice University in
Houston, Texas started two new professional master’s degree programs: one
in Nanoscale Physics and one in Environmental Decision Making and Analysis.
The development of a third track: Subsurface Geophysics was finalized and is
being offered in Fall 2003 for the first year.
These degree programs are part of an initiative sponsored by the Sloan
Foundation, which has helped institute numerous such programs nationwide.
Prospective students are new B.S. graduates in technical disciplines and
personnel working in the industrial sector who want to expand or enhance
their career for completion.
The program combines detailed scientific instruction and practical training
with teaching of business practices and communication skills. This
combination allows students to move more easily into management careers in
the research and development, design, and marketing of new science-based
products or into consulting in fields where their technical training is
valued. Graduates obtain intense scientific training that greatly exceeds
that taught at the bachelor's level as well as gain the management exposure
that fulfills industry needs. It is also an alternative for students who do
not want to continue with a PhD.
One major reason for Rice University to offer a professional master's degree
program in Nanoscale Physics is, that the university is a well-established
center for nanoscience, with researchers active in several departments
outside the physics core. Centers and institutes located at Rice include,
the Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology and The Rice
Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, which includes among its
faculty Nobel laureates R. L. Smalley and R.Curl.
The professional M.S. in Nanoscale Physics combines a strong component in
quantum theory with the study of practical nano- and mesoscale devices. It
focuses on interdisciplinary studies in many areas of nanoscale science,
including carbon nanotubes, nanoshells, and nanobiology. Courses include
Nanostructures and Nanotechnology, Nano-optics and Nanophotonics, and
Characterization and Fabrication at the Nanoscale.
