Iranian researchers from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences studied the effect of a type of herbal compound on the treatment of breast cancer.

New Step towards Breast Cancer Treatment by Herbal Compounds

This material was produced in form of nano-capsule by using biodegradable polymers. Laboratorial results proved the appropriate performance of the nanodrug in the treatment of cancer cells.

Chrysin is extracted from honey and other plants. It has anti-inflammation, anti-oxidant, and antiallergic properties. Studied carried out in the recent years show that chrysin is an appropriate option for cancer treatment because it prevents the proliferation of cancer cells.

Chrysin plays an important role in the prevention of the growth of cancer cells, and it reduces the cyclin D1 gene. Therefore, the researchers aimed to study the effects of chrysin at pure and nano-encapsulated with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) and polyethylene glycol (PLGA-PEG) forms on T-47D breast cancer and cyclin D1 gene.

Based on the results, the use of nano-encapsulated form of chyrsin results in effectiveness of the drug at low concentrations and improvement in the drug delivery in anticancer drugs with low bioavailability. Normal numerical bioavailability equals to a percentage or a part of a drug dosage that reaches to the blood cycle in an active manner.

Results of the research have been published in ASIAN PACIFIC JOURNAL OF CANCER PREVENTION, vol. 16, issue 9, 2015, pp. 3753-3758.
