Abstract:
Iranian analytical chemistry researchers from Kashan University presented a combined statistical method to measure effective compounds in herbal drugs with a detection limit higher than the usual methods.

New Method Proposed in Iran for Measurement of Effective Compounds in Herbal Drugs

Tehran, Iran | Posted on June 19th, 2014

Dr. Saeed Ma'soum, the supervisor of the research, explained how the study was carried out. "In the present study, our purpose was to combine electrochemical and chemometric methods to measure two types of herbal drugs catechin and gallic acid with antioxidant properties. It must be pointed out that from electrochemical detecting point of view, these materials have similar responds with overlapping peak of higher than 90%. Since it is not possible to determine these two species through electrochemical systems, we tried to obtain an appropriate substitution for separation methods by combining it with chemometric methods. In addition, carbon paste modified with multi-walled carbon nanotube was used to modify the surface and increase the sensitivity of the electrode."

Dr. Ma'soum believes that the use of chemometric statistical method as a complementary method in addition to other spectrometry and chemometry methods prevents high costs of continuity, extraction, and other tests for the characterization and measurement of species, and therefore, the process becomes easier.

Results of the research have been published in Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, vol. 193, issue 1, March 2014, pp. 582-591.
