Abstract:
NanoTecNexus (NTN), a leading nanotech educational organization launches its next installment of educational forums on June 3, 2014 spotlighting Nanosponge technology developed by Dr. Liangfang Zhang, Professor, Department of NanoEngineering at UC San Diego. The Nanosponge is developed to absorb toxins from deadly bacteria like MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and others that can be resistant to antibiotics.

The forum will be in the daVinci Auditorium of Knobbe & Martens, 12790 El Camino Real in San Diego and commences at 5:30 pm for Reception & Networking. The program will begin at 6:30 pm. Click here to register: http://nanotecnexus.org/fighting-super-bugs-with-nanosponge-technology/

The event marks the ongoing dedication of NanoTecNexus to bring critical content and issues to the forefront benefiting the community-at-large through education of novel and beneficial nanotechnologies. How iimportant is this? Each year, nearly two million people are infected with an antibiotic resistant "super bug" of one type or another. Out of these, 23,000 will die.

Here's the wake up call to everyone: Gone are the days when streptococcus was easy to treat or how rare it was to get a staph infection. Many strains of staph and strep are now becoming "superbugs". Our everyday illnesses now need antibiotics and the ones that needed antibiotics now need stronger antibiotics, or they don't even work at all.

In September, the Centers for Disease Control sounded the alarm: Unless we stopped misusing and overusing antibiotics, they could become useless against disease-causing bacteria that are becoming resistant to them - evolving into so-called superbugs. One of the most common superbugs is MRSA, a staph infection that kills an estimated 19,000 Americans each year, mostly in hospitals and convalescent facilities.

MRSA is known to be difficult to treat with standard types of antibiotics and thus more dangerous. Beyond hospitals and healthcare facilities, cases have been reported from places such as locker rooms and gyms, pediatric settings, or military recruits' barracks, among others.

About NanoTecNexus
NanoTecNexus (NTN) has traditionally focused on the business-education ecosystem specializing in the field of nanotechnology and its impact on industry, academia and society. Founded in 2004, it is acclaimed as a leading non-profit organization dedicated to the business-education ecosystem. Its mission is to achieve meaningful change in how society learns about nanoscience and inspire K-12 students to pursue STEM education and careers. NTN was originally founded as NanoBioNexus in 2004 and dedicated the first five years to the intersection of nanotechnology and biotechnology. In 2009, the organization expanded to other sectors and continues to evolve to meet the ever changing needs of its target market.
