Abstract:
In October of 2012, Felix Baumgartner became the first human to break the sound barrier without help from an engine, executing a 24-mile jump from the stratosphere as part of the Stratos project. While millions marveled at the feat, few outside of the environmental sciences thought about the testing necessary to make it possible.

ESTECH 2014 attendees will be able to find out first hand from keynote speaker Rick Evans during the ESTECH Awards and Membership Luncheon, being held Wednesday, May 15 at San Antonio's Grand Hyatt Hotel. Evans served as a key member of the Stratos testing team, providing a simulated high-altitude environment for Baumgartner to practice his procedures in addition to testing the capsule used in the project.

Evans is a member of the highly specialized aerospace research team at Wyle Science, Technology and Engineering. He is a retired military basic-flight instructor; served as the director, developer, and instructor of Human Performance and Mishap Investigation courses at the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine; and was an airline pilot for Southwest Airlines.

The keynote address by Evans will be just one of the many events drawing professionals from all over the world to ESTECH 2014, which brings together experts in the contamination control, nanotechnology, and testing and reliability fields. Visit www.iest.org or call (847) 981-0100 to find out more about the training courses, sessions, working group meetings, exposition, and networking events taking place in San Antonio.
