Abstract:
Izon Science, a leading manufacturer of precision instrumentation for nano- and micro-scale particle analysis, is supporting the fast growing field of extracellular vesicle research with sponsorship of The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) 2013 Conference. Over 1,000 researchers are gathering in Boston to share knowledge on extracellular vesicles which can be used as biomarkers for early detection and diagnosis of diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. They are now known to be intrinsic to a wide range of biological processes and are therefore of fundamental importance.

Hans van der Voorn, Executive Chairman of Izon Science says, "The size of the event has more than doubled since it was first held last year - a testament to the passion of the organisers for their field and in line with the rapid growth of research into extracellular vesicles."

Extracellular vesicles, such as exosomes and microvesicles, are sub-micron particles released by cells into blood and other bodily fluids. Extracellular vesicles are receiving research attention as they have been found to occur in greater number, with irregular size and surface properties, in disease states.

Van der Voorn says, "An immediate benefit of the emerging detailed knowledge of extracellular vesicles is as diagnostic or prognostic indicators of disease. Accurate, high-resolution characterization techniques are essential for researchers to make progress in this area. Izon is pleased that its qNano systems are well suited to this work, offering the highest accuracy for measuring vesicle number, size distribution and surface charge. Further research on detailed bio-analysis of the surface of vesicles is underway.

"We anticipate that the next wave of clinical diagnostics will be based on high resolution measurement and analysis of extracellular vesicles to rapidly, accurately and reliably detect disease. We are pleased to be in position to help our customers and collaborators achieve this goal by providing tools and ideas to further their research. We all look forward to the introduction of the medical benefits into the clinic."

The ISEV 2013 conference, featuring over 440 presentations, will be held in Boston Park Plaza Hotel from 17-20 April.
