Madrid welcomes the Congress On Risks For Public Health and The Environment from 16th to May 18th

Madrid, Spain | Posted on April 18th, 2012

International experts in toxicology, biosafety, environment and technology assessment will meet from 16th to 18th May in Madrid at the Congress on Risks for of Public Health and Environment which will be held at the Polytechnic University. This Congress is organized by the European Network of Scientists for Social Responsibility and Environmental (ENSSER), the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Health Defense Organisation (HDO).

The event will address how applied and emerging technologies can affect our health and environment. The conference covers nanotechnology, genetically modified crops, toxic chemicals and pesticides electromagnetic. A specific focus will be the debate on ecological, economic and social effects of the large scale Roundup Ready agriculture in Argentina built upon both Monsanto's genetically modified soy and the herbicide Roundup.

The second focus of the conference is the presentation of the 2nd volume of the European Environment Agency's publication 'Late lessons from early warnings'. The EEA late lessons report brings a wealth of new information about the whole story of leaded petrol and its impacts on children's brains; the realities of the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear accidents; the effects on reproduction and biological development on wildlife and children from the endocrine disrupting chemicals in pharmaceuticals, plastics and pesticides; and the choices facing us in agriculture between the narrow food fix of genetically modified crops or the meeting the broader needs of farming communities who want the sustainable soil, water, pollination, pollution absorption and employment services that their ecosystems can bring.

The report concludes with ideas for greater public engagement in choosing innovation pathways, for example in agriculture and energy to 2050; and with suggestions on how to improve the value of risk assessments and the justice available to both those early warning scientists who get harassed for their "inconvenient truths" and the victims of harm who currently wait decades for compensation.

The conference will result in an Action Plan bringing scientists, NGO experts and decision makers together to develop more comprehensive and effective technology assessment approaches and to better implement the precautionary principle as one foundation of EU environmental policies and decision making.

Amongst the attendees are international scientists and NGOs, for instance, Andrés Carrasco, Yury Grigoriev, Nicolás Olea, Miquel Porta and Gilles-Eric Seralini as well as representatives of ClientEarth (Brussels), EEA, ENSSER, Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL, Brussels), International Electro-Magnetic Fields Alliance (IEMFA, The Netherlands).

About European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER)
The European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER) brings together independent scientific expertise to develop public-good knowledge for the critical assessment of existing and emerging technologies. The objective of ENSSER is the advancement of public-good science and research for the protection of the environment, biological diversity and human health against adverse impacts of new technologies and their products.

EEA (www.eea.europa.eu)

The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union. Its task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment. The EEA is a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, and also the general public. Currently, the EEA has 32 member countries.

FUNDACIÓN VIVOSANO - HDO (www.health-defense.org)

The Health Defense Organisation (HDO) aims to raise public awareness on the risks of technologies, substances and products that surround us and to strengthen European public policies to protect both people's health and the environment. It works with scientists, doctors, NGOs and other similar groups to achieve the democratization of science. We work with more than 27 organizations in 12 European countries.
