Abstract:
In collaboration with scientists from the Italian Institute for Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) JRC scientists investigated the carcinogenic potential of pure and chemically functionalised multiwall carbon nanotubes using the Balb/3T3 cells. Results showed no cytotoxicity nor genotoxicity , but some morphological transformation through cell intraction of nanomaterials could be observed pointing towards a carcinogenic potential. The scientists recommend the integration of various tests, also based on physicochemical characterization of the nanomaterials to clearly evaluate the potential toxicity of nanomaterials.
The video, issued in October 2011, illustrates JRC activities in support to safety assessment of nanomaterials in consumer products.
