Abstract:
"Silver nanoparticles were synthesized in polymeric beds such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and so forth. However, gelatine has many advantages over the mentioned polymers, among which mention can be made of reasonable price, availability, and harmlessness to the environment," Dr. Majid Doroudi, researcher at Chemistry Department of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, said.

"Taking into account the new and specific approach of the scientists to the synthesis of materials through environmental-friendly manners, we tried to follow the principles of green chemistry in this research," he added. "Therefore, we used natural based identifiers that do not harm the environment. In this research, gelatine and glucose were used as the stabilizer and the reducer of silver ions to metallic silver, respectively."

According to Dr. Doroudi, one of the important advantages of this research in comparison with the previous researches is the use of a biocompatible biopolymer as the stabilizer and the use of glucose as a green reducer identifier, which is a nontoxic and harmless identifier compared to other well-known identifiers in the production of metallic nanoparticles such as sodium borohydrate.

He described high purity and stability of the synthesized nanoparticles as other advantages of this project.

Pointing to the fact that gelatine is a biocompatible polymer without anti-bacterial properties, the researcher of Chemistry Department of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad said, "If this polymer is placed near silver nanoparticles, it can be used in the production of bandages for infected wounds as a compound with anti-bacterial properties. This product can also be used as a catalyst in various industries."
