Abstract:
The OECD has been co-ordinating multilateral work on chemical safety since 1971. Over the past 40 years, OECD efforts have led to the development of harmonised high-quality instruments and policies that help countries better manage the risks chemical products pose for humans and the environment.

40 Years of Chemical Safety at the OECD: Wednesday 15 June 2011

Paris, France | Posted on June 11th, 2011

Harmonisation of chemical safety policies at the OECD has allowed governments and industry to avoid duplicating work, minimise non-tariff barriers to trade and create a level playing field for industry. The programme has led to substantial efficiencies for government and the industry, with total savings estimated at more than €150 million per year.

Government officials, business leaders, chemical experts and academics will discuss the major achievements of the OECD's chemical safety work as well as the new challenges going forward during a public forum at OECD headquarters on Wednesday 15 June starting at 09:30 a.m.

This conference is open to media.

Slovenian State Secretary for Health Ivan Eržen (Chair of UN International Conference on Chemicals Management) will deliver the keynote address.

Other participants include: Steven Bradbury, Director, Office of Pesticide Programs, US EPA; Geert Dancet, Director of the European Chemicals Agency; Steven Howdle, Chair of the 2011 Chemicals Science and Societies Summit; Makoto Hayashi, Director General, Japanese Biosafety Research Center; Christian Schaible, senior policy officer at the Chemicals and Industry Policy, European Environmental Bureau; and Gernot Klotz, Executive Director of Research and Innovation, European Chemical Industry Council.

Speakers will address the scientific advances that are accelerating the development of new testing and information gathering methods, as well as strategies for combining and using them in assessment procedures.

Participants will also discuss these challenges and the possibilities for working together to ensure that emerging methodologies can be used by governments in the most efficient and effective ways and that barriers to harmonisation are avoided.
