Government spending on synthetic bio on the rise

Abstract:
The J.C. Venter Institute's announcement that it has created a bacterial cell controlled by a synthetic genetic code made many people aware of synthetic biology for the first time. But a new analysis by the Woodrow Wilson Center found that in addition to private sector work in the field, the U.S. government has spent about $430 million on research related to synthetic biology since 2005.

The study also notes that European countries - the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Germany - have spent about $160 million on synthetic bio research in the same period.
