Abstract:
Wiley-VCH and 16 European Chemical Societies Celebrate the Frontiers of Chemistry in Paris

E. Wille Wins Award of the French Chemical Society

It's the Chemistry!

Paris | Posted on May 27th, 2010

What would keep 600 chemists from enjoying a sunny spring day in any of wonderful parks of Paris or on its river banks and sit in the dark lecture hall of Maison de la Chimie all day instead? Wiley-VCH and its chemical-society partners (known as ChemPubSoc Europe) found the key on May 21, 2010: They invited ten renowned speakers from Europe, the US, and Israel, and let them discuss progress at the frontiers of chemistry. The list of speakers included Nobel laureates Gerhard Ertl (heterogeneous catalysis), Roger Tsien (tissue staining beyond GFP), Ada Yonath (structure of the
ribosome), and Jean-Marie Lehn (supramolecular and constitutional dynamic chemisty).

During lunch break, the laureates readily autographed books, Nobel lecture reprints, and other material handed to them by patiently queuing attendees, some of whom you might even call fans.

Michel Orrit (nano-optics), Marc Fontecave (hydrogenase enzymes), Sir Alan Fersht (tumor suppression), Michael Grätzel (solar cells), Nicolas Winssinger (self-assembly), and Luisa De Cola (nanomaterials) complemented the spectrum of speakers and topics to demonstrate the breadth of content offered by the two journals whose 10th anniversary was the occasion for this symposium: ChemBioChem and ChemPhysChem. The two journals are part of a range of titles published by Wiley-VCH in collaboration with ChemPubSoc Europe, a consortium of 16 European chemical societies founded in 1997. This partnership has just been deepened to cover less conventional media, as well: The symposium saw the launch of its new chemistry portal, ChemistryViews.org, where those who were unfortunate enough to miss the real event could view it live online. The broadcast caught the attention of several thousand users world-wide. Chemists across the board will be able to spot their favorite content on ChemistryViews.org from now on, such as the recordings of all symposium lectures.

A poster display with about 100 contributions accompanied the symposium; Wiley-VCH and the host Société Chimique de France (SCF) sponsored three poster prizes in each of the physical chemistry and biochemistry categories, the disciplines of the anniversary titles ChemPhysChem and ChemBioChem.

For her long-term efforts for the benefit of the chemical societies and the scientific community, Wiley-VCH's Vice-President and Executive Director Global Chemistry, Dr. Eva E. Wille was awarded the medal of the SCF during the symposium by the society's president Olivier Homolle.

Recordings of the lectures are available at www.chemistryviews.org/chem/holding/index.html
