Nanoparticles could help end chemotherapy
Abstract:
Univ. of Central Florida researchers have engineered nanoparticles which
specifically target and destroy cancerous tumors. They carry the
chemotherapy agent Taxol, which has previously caused many negative side
effects because it travels through the bloodstream, inadvertently
delivering toxins to the whole body. Potentially sparing patients from
toxic, whole-body chemotherapies, the nanoparticles also carry a dye and
an iron oxide magnetic so they can be used with fluorescent imaging and
MRI.
