Abstract:
The awards will be presented at the WBMA's annual conference, which is being held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Country Springs Hotel and Conference Center, Waukesha, Wis. The Rising Stars of Wisconsin' Biotechnology & Medical Device Industry awards program recognizes the industry's next generation of leaders, regardless of age. The award winners have been selected because of the demonstrable impact he or she has had on the success of his or her company through one or more of the following: extraordinary entrepreneurship and business leadership, product innovation or technological achievement, marketing or promotion excellence, or outstanding sales accomplishment.
The 2008 Rising Star award winners are:
* Tom Foti, director of custom services, EMD Chemicals Inc. Mr. Foti joined EMD/Novagen 16 years ago and has progressed from production scientist to production planner to director of customer services. He recently organized a training program in Madison for EMD/Merck KGaA business development professionals from around the world in which Gov. Doyle participated.
* Dave Rozema, senior scientist, Roche Mirus. Dr. Rozema was the leader of the Mirus chemistry team that developed the small interfering RNA, or siRNA, nanotechnology called dynamic polyconjugates, which targets the delivery of siRNAs to tissues in the body. The technology was Mirus' primary focus during the past eight years and stimulated Roche's interest in acquiring it.
* Laura Douglass, president and chief executive, Next Generation Clinical Research. Ms. Douglass has more than 20 years of management experience in biopharmaceutical industry research and development, and operations. She founded contract research company Next Generation Clinical Research in 1999. The company provides clinical trial management services to small and mid-sized biotechnology companies.
* Monika de Arruda Indig, Ph.D., director of clinical and contract research, Blood Center of Wisconsin. Dr. de Arruda Indig designed this new business segment within the Blood Center and is responsible for all aspects of clinical and contract research, including study design, subject enrollment, a wide range of testing services and custom assay development. She has extensive experience in all aspects of product development and commercialization.
* Marilyn Olson-Munoz, Ph.D., associate vice president, Third Wave Technologies, a member of the Hologic family of companies. Dr. Olson-Munoz led the development of Third Wave's groundbreaking cervical cancer screening test. During a six-year period, she lead all technical, clinical and regulatory aspects of launching what is becoming the leading human papillomvirus cervical cancer screen on the market. She joined Third Wave in 1997.
"The state's biotechnology and medical device industry is pleased to recognize these outstanding leaders," said James L. Leonhart, executive director of the WBMA. "They are the best and brightest in the next generation of business and scientific leaders who will ensure Wisconsin's continued development as a global leader in the biosciences."
