Abstract:
"A craftsman is only as good as his tools," or so the adage goes. As we discovered after talking with our May sponsor, the same can be said for research into advanced applications of nanotechnology.

CVI Melles Griot Helps Nanotech Researchers See the Light

Cambridge, MA | Posted on May 27th, 2008

As the dust settled on its 2007 merger, CVI Melles Griot, emerged as a multi-faceted world leader in the design and creation of laser, optics, and photonic solutions, many of which make the pursuit of nanotechnology advances possible.

"We really do provide the high-tech toolkit that many researchers use to build, assemble, and study their nanotechnology projects," said Lynore Abbott, CVI Melles Griot Director of Marketing, Optics and Photonic Products.

In fact, a survey of papers submitted for the upcoming Nanotech 2008 conference reveals numerous instances where the work simply wouldn't be possible without the advanced lasers, optics and photonic tools created by companies like CVI Melles Griot:
Research Using Laser as a Source

"These types of research applications typically use a laser, some optical components, hardware and a table to sit everything on," said Abbot. "We offer the most complete portfolio of laser technologies in the industry, with wavelength ranges from the ultraviolet through the nearinfrared, with delivered power up to 5 Watts. We also offer design and manufacturing of Laser-Optical Assemblies incorporating multiple laser sources, optics, mechanics and electronics. These kinds of reliable assemblies require manufacturing to sub-micron and micro-radian tolerances — and that's one of our strengths."
Research Employing Laser Material Processing (sintering, ablation, and dicing)

"This kind of research typically uses a combination of laser, optical components, and hardware," said Abbott. "While we don't specialize in lasers for these specific applications, we certainly make everything from the laser to the point of action, including lenses, beam expanders, aplanatic lenses, opto-mechanical hardware to hold everything, and the tables to put everything on."
Research Using UV or Deep UV Lithography to Create Microstructures/MicroMachines/'Lab on a Chip' Applications

"Anyone doing this has generally got a lot of UV Optics in their systems," said Abbott. "CVI MG produces very high quality optical components for these types of "semiconductor" applications. Highly durable coatings, precision lenses, and non-distorting windows and mirrors."

The company also produces a wide range of optical elements and systems from the deep UV to the long-wave IR. Designed to meet the industry's tightest manufacturing tolerances, these systems can be used in the most demanding industrial and research applications.

CVI Melles Griot also brings extensive experience with traditional optical materials to the development of specialized processes for producing high-performance CaF2 optical elements for use in the deep UV wavelength region.
The company's infrared optical manufacturing capabilities include the manufacture of windows, domes, lenses, prisms, beamsplitters from germanium, silicon, ZnSe, ZnS, MZnS, CaF2, GaAs, As2S3, AMTIR, GASIR® and other materials.

"Our optical components for this field are not only used by the end users or integrators but also by the laser manufacturers themselves as cavity optics," added Abbott. "It speaks volumes that the laser manufacturers depend on our laser cavity optics to be industry leading in environmental and long-lifetime performance."

Providing solutions for semiconductor, biotechnology, industrial, and basic research applications, CVI Melles Griot manufactures on three continents, and maintains sales and engineering centers in 11 countries worldwide.
