MU receives $6 million gift to study breast cancer, heart disease

Abstract:
The University of Missouri announced a $6 million gift today that will support 10 endowed professors who study breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The gift by Margaret Proctor Mulligan, a breast cancer survivor from Ashland who died last year, adds to her previous donations used to create the Margaret Proctor Mulligan Breast Health and Research Program at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in 2005.

Mulligan was born in Ashland in 1910 to Micajah and Martha Proctor and moved at age 10 to Columbia, where she was an advertising manager at the Tribune, managed retail stores and, eventually, joined her father's real estate business. She remained active in real estate and investment until her death in 2007 at age 97.

Mulligan's gift announcement was made this morning along with a list of the first six recipients benefiting MU scientists in oncology, pharmacology and physiology, molecular microbiology and immunology, pathology and anatomical sciences and nanotechnology.
