NanoArt 2007 International online competition

NanoArt is a new art form where micro or nanosculptures created by artists or scientists through chemical or/and physical processes are visualized with powerful research tools like Scanning Electron Microscopes. The monochromatic electron microscope scans are processed further using different artistic techniques to create pieces of art that can be showcased for the general public. Because this is a new art form, nanoart21.org founded by artists/scientist Cris Orfescu (www.crisorfescu.com) will provide 3 high resolution monochromatic electron scans (click on the thumbnails bellow to download) for competitors to choose from. The participating artists will have to alter this image in any artistic way to finish the artistic-scientific process and create a NanoArt work. The artists or scientists are encouraged to participate with their own image as long as this visualizes micro or nano structures. Please provide details about the artistic process in the application form (scroll down to download).

Submission deadline is December 31, 2007.

The worldwide competition NanoArt 2007 is open to all artists 18 years and older. Online voting will open January 1, 2008 through March 31, 2008. Judging is via the Internet and decided by our site visitors. The sponsor reserves the final decision. Winners will be notified and published online around April 15, 2008..The competition will be promoted on different venues online, nanoart21.org contacts, word-of-mouth. The artists could promote the competition also. More voters equal better competition, but please try to be fair to the other artists when you ask your relatives and friends to vote. However, you are welcome to advertise the competition on your website and other venues you might consider.

The artists can participate with up to 5 images. Please send one image per e-mail. Each image should be sent with an entry form. The entry form (click here to download the file in PDF format or here to download the file in Word format), and the image file for web presentation should be sent by e-mail to The web image file must be .jpg or .gif at a resolution of 72 dpi with the longer dimension of maximum 600 pixels.

Three Seed Images of approximate 3000 x 2300 pixels at a resolution of 72 dpi are provided by the competition sponsor, nanoart21.org.

The final artwork should be maximum 40 in (102 cm) in the shorter direction and maximum 90 in (229 cm) in the longer direction (printing constrains) at a resolution of 300 dpi in a common format (.tiff preferred). You might be asked to send this file on a CD/DVD if we have an order for your work. If the sale is generated through nanoart21.org, the artist will receive 65% and nanoart21.org will retain 35% of the sale price. Nanoart21.org will print and ship the artwork to customers. All participating works will be exhibited on the nanoart21.org site together with the artist name, a short description of the artistic process, the artist's web site and e-mail until the end of the voting period. Winners will be selected by vote from all our visitors.

The first 10 winners will be exhibited on nanoart21.org site for one full year and will be invited to exhibit at the second edition of The International Festival of NanoArt. The first edition of the festival was hosted in May 2007 by Kotka Photographic Center, in Finland.

Copyright of entered artworks remains with the artist who agrees to grant permission to nanoart21.org to use the submitted material in exhibits on the nanoart21.org web site and other media for marketing and printing for off line marketing. You must accept that all entries are archived and displayed online. Your permission to display the entry for the competition and later in the archives cannot be reversed and its use or removal is entirely at the discretion of nanoart21.org.
