FDA admits it's not meeting its mission

Abstract:
Consumer advocates and the biotechnology industry yesterday hailed a report on the Food and Drug Administration that outlines devastating inefficiencies at the agency and echoes what other groups have been complaining about for years.

Without the proper technology, the agency can't keep up with developments in emerging technologies such as nanotechnology or wireless health care, he said.

The report includes a recommendation for implementing an organizational and process structure, called an incubator for innovation, that supports regulatory work while bolstering internal science.
