New blood test may warn of disease

Abstract:
A blood test that could provide early warning of disease in any organ of the body has been unveiled by one of the world's leading biologists.

The blood would be analysed by a specialised chip that can already monitor some 20 blood proteins, and will eventually monitor around 2500 proteins that signal the health of 50 key organs and major tissue types in the body.

Dr Hood was visiting the UK to lecture at Imperial College London and to give a Royal Academy of Engineering Lecture at the Royal Society of Medicine, where he unveiled a powerful new approach that will be used in a new, as yet unnamed, company.

His overall aim is to blend the latest understanding of changes in proteins, genetic material (both DNA and RNA) and cells with cheap diagnostics based on nanotechnology and microchips to reveal a tell tale set of proteins secreted into blood by each organ that can be used to monitor their health.
