Nanomedicine-is it all hype? -or a real revolution in healthcare?

London, UK | Posted on October 31st, 2007

Our society is constantly seeking ways of coping with the maladies of a rapidly ageing population like cardiovascular disease, cancer and arthritis, as well as new "lifestyle" illnesses and conditions like diabetes and obesity. Alongside this is the continuing need to eradicate malaria, tuberculosis, Aids and other global killers. Other crises include shortages of transplants, hereditary diseases and problems like drug side-effects, where the cure for one patient can sometimes pose serious problems for another. Nanomedicine has been heralded as an exciting major breakthrough but important questions still remain.
o Doesn't using nanotechnology carry new risks?
o Are there adequate safety controls in place?
o What about ethical issues?
o Will it be affordable?
o Is there a realistic possibility that this new science will lead to radically improved healthcare?

Hear what our panel of experts have to say and feel free to ask them your own questions:

o Dr Doug Naysmith MP Former academic and immunologist, and now MP for Bristol North-West
o Dr Leonard Fass Director of Academic Relations, GE Healthcare
o Dr Evdokia Korakianiti Scientist, Pre-Authorisation Unit for Human Medicines, European Medicines Agency
o Michel Lussier Highly successful innovative medical technology entrepreneur
Chair: Geoff Watts Presenter of BBC Radio 4's Leading Edge‚ programme

This public debate is open to all and attendance is free. However, as places are limited, early registration is highly recommended.
