When In Rome, Think Smart

Abstract:
The Italian government has targeted the life sciences, information and communications technologies, and nanotechnology as its top sectors for expansion. The region of Lazio, which includes Rome, is Italy's second largest In terms of GDP, with around 500 foreign companies located there. Its research system includes public and private R&D facilities, with approximately 30,000 active researchers. Tax breaks are considered for companies supporting innovation processes, industrial research, and commerce.

Only Minneapolis and Los Angeles, CA have a higher density of bio-medical enterprises than the Valley of Modena, Northeast of Lazio. Over 105 companies with over 4,000 employees cluster in the area. Additionally, more than 1,200 employees work in nanotechnology throughout Italy.
