Minister urges rapid action on multi-billion euro Joint Technology Initiatives

Abstract:
Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills Science & Innovation Minister Ian Pearson has used the Competitiveness Council in Brussels to push for rapid decisions on the proposed new multi-billion euro public-private research and development partnerships (Joint Technology Initiatives).

Six potential JTIs were identified during the FP7 negotiations: Innovative Medicines (IMI); Aeronautics and Air Transport (Clean Sky); Embedded Computing Systems (ARTEMIS); Nanoelectronics (ENIAC); Fuel Cells and Hydrogen (FCH) and Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES). Subsequently it has become apparent that GMES does not fit the JTI concept and consequently it will be taken forward on its own track. Further JTIs are possible during the implementation of FP7. Negotiations on the four most advanced JTIs (IMI, Clean Sky, ARTEMIS and ENIAC) have commenced in Brussels with the aim of launching these initiatives by the end of 2007.
