Abstract:
As part of my professional duties as a scientist, attending unimportant meetings falls into the list of slightly less onerous tasks that must be performed. Recently, a local research institute, called the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology held an exhibition day where local researchers display some of the results they have published over the previous year, and researchers external to the institute give presentations about some of their research and prognosticate on the direction that their field is heading. As you can tell from the name of the research institute, the talks were mainly about nanotechnology but covered a wide range of topics including fluid mechanics, biotechnology, and optical sensing, among others. Obviously a large part of the research is focused on electronics technology, so it is, perhaps, fitting that Professor Jason Woo from the UCLA Nanosystems Institute gave a talk on some of the barriers to be overcome in scaling transistors to ever smaller dimensions.
