Waterless, detergent-free washing machine on its way
Abstract:
The manager of Samsung's Consumer Electronics Division, Özlem Koçdar, pointed out that this competition among leading technology companies to develop energy-saving products will certainly contribute to future beneficial measures. "Only without using hot water is it possible to save 30 percent of energy," she says. Koçdar says the revolutionary washing machines will not use hot water or detergent but will clean clothes with completely natural methods. This way, resistance in machines, which heat water inside, will not be damaged by lime, meaning it will no longer be necessary to use chemicals to protect the machine from harmful lime. Koçdar argues that this technology will also render the machines more durable along with their consuming 30 percent less energy. After being asked that obvious question about "how that will ever be possible," Koçdar gives a two-word answer: "Silver Nano." He is referring to nanotechnology, the newly emerging breakthrough technology that deals with controlling matter on a minute scale, as well as the fabrication of devices of this size. This technology protects the devices from bumps, sunbeams and corrosion. Silver Nano may also be applied to other machines as a cover up. Silver is reduced to a "nano" scale -- roughly 75,000 times thinner than a hair.
