Nottingham swaps textiles for science

Abstract:
A new report suggests that Nottingham is successfully shaking off its industrial past and transforming itself into a modern centre for scientific excellence.

The report, produced by the consultancy firm Experian, was commissioned by the city council. It found that the science sector grew by 3,200 jobs between 2003 and 2005 and forecast growth of 15pc over the next decade. It says the city is third in the country for jobs in information and communications technology (ICT), beaten only by Oxford and Bristol.

Already 20pc of the workforce are in science- related businesses. Recent months have seen the launch of both a science park and a new nanotechnology centre at the University of Nottingham.
