Taking a Very Close Look

Abstract:
What do cancer treatments, cars, and the weird picture below have in common? They wouldn't be possible without microscopes. Microscopes are arguably one of the most important inventions of the modern era. With their help, doctors can tell whether a cell is malignant or harmless, engineers can examine engines for otherwise invisible flaws, and newspapers can tease their readers with intriguing illustrations.

One of the world's most important microscope manufacturers is the German company Carl Zeiss. Founded by Carl Friedrich Zeiss in Jena, the company has survived two world wars and a major relocation to become one of the world's largest and best known producers of optical devices.

Russia is one of more than 30 countries where it has subsidiaries, and Dr. Maxim Igelnik is the general manager for Russia and the CIS.
