PGI research may help lower drug dosage
Abstract:
In future, people suffering from tuberculosis (TB), cardiovasucular diseases, hypertension and other chronic diseases may not have to take drugs daily for the rest of their lives. A path breaking pre-clinical research by a team of doctors at the PGI has established a system of sustained drug delivery through nanotechnology.
The system involves encapsulating the drug in nanoparticles taken from synthetic polymers. This ensures that the drug stays in the plasma and the organs for a longer period. Secondly, since the frequency of taking drugs comes down, lesser drugs are used.
