Purdue nanotechnology center evacuated

Abstract:
Eight people at about 10:50 a.m. today were evacuated from the Birck Nanotechnology Center after a refrigerant leak was reported.

The Purdue University fire department went to the building, located in the university's Discovery Park at 1205 W. State St., to respond to an automatic mechanical alarm.

When personnel entered to check the alarm, they noticed a "sweet" smelling odor in the building.

When one responder began having a reaction to the odor, firefighters left the building. The firefighter who had the reaction to the chemical was taken to the St. Elizabeth Medical Center emergency room where he was treated and released, said Carol Shelby, Purdue's senior director of environmental, health and public safety.
