'Carbon Nanotube' Wins Local Scientist International Award
Abstract:
An engineering lecturer from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has won a gold medal for creating "carbon nanotube" which can be used as a reinforcing agent in tyres, replacing the traditional carbon black.
Dr Faridah Yusof from the university's Engineering Faculty who was the only female participant from UUIM, won a gold and two silver medals at the Invention and New Product Exhibition (INPEX 2007) held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the United States from June 6 to 9.
The deputy dean of the Biotechnology Engineering's Research and Development Centre of IIUM said her invention, also known as "enhanced properties of new carbon nanotube or natural Malaysian rubber nanocomposite", could be used to replace carbon black as "nanofillers".
