A lively debate
Abstract:
Rather more contentious were the panel's conclusions regarding the opportunities and threats with which the UK has to deal: key opportunities were identified as intellectual property development and re-use; local world-class manufacturing facilities via CEMs and embedded software leadership. According to the panel, the UK can also expect to benefit from developments in nanotechnology; global environmental legislation; new and evolving applications for electronics in healthcare, life sciences, automotive, security and lighting; and the opportunities presented by new materials such as polymers, plastics and compounds. Major threats to our domestic electronics industry included the widespread perception of engineering as ‘dull and difficult'; the threat posed by governmental focus on technology in Asia, in particular the vast numbers of electronics engineers graduating in Asian universities; economic support of the product development infrastructure in Asia and a further escalation in the migration of European manufacturing to Asia.
