Kids create tiny tool
Abstract:
Children win prize for designing a glucose monitor implanted in a tooth.
The contest, sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association, challenged kindergarten through 12th-grade students to research scientific principles and current technologies as the basis for designing innovative technologies that could exist by 2027.
If ever realized, the "D.A.P.e.S" system would employ the relatively new knowledge of nanotechnology to deliver glucose level readings from a diabetic's tooth to a Game Boy-sized control panel. That panel would make suggestions of what a patient could eat to increase glucose levels at any given time, like an apple or veggies.
