AMD 'chip fab' plans inspire visit to rival's backyard

Abstract:
Business and political leaders here are raving about a trip they took to Hillsboro, Ore., last month to see what the Capital Region's nanotechnology future could look like.

The Hillsboro area, which is just west of Portland, is home to about 16,000 employees of computer chip manufacturer Intel Corp., Oregon's largest private employer.

Economic developers have long been pointing to Hillsboro as a model for what the Capital Region could look like if Advanced Micro Devices Inc. -- Intel's main competitor -- builds a proposed $3.2 billion computer chip factory in Saratoga County.
