LOS ANGELES, CA | Posted on May 15th, 2007

Dr. Soon-Shiong, who is of Chinese heritage and a native of South Africa, is a noted research scientist, physician and surgeon, and was awarded this honor for his efforts in scientific innovation. He has devoted his career to developing next-generation technologies to enhance the medical care of patients with life-threatening diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Dr. Soon-Shiong performed the world's first encapsulated islet transplant in a diabetic patient, developed the nanoparticle albumin bound (nab™) technology platform, is a co-inventor of over 50 issued U.S. and foreign patents and has published more than 100 scientific papers.

As part of his commitment to bringing about evolutionary change to the practice of medicine and addressing the serious health care issues facing the country, Dr. Soon-Shiong and his family recently donated $35 million to the Saint John's Health Center. The donation was designed to complete the building of a world class inpatient life science center, and to begin development of a new Center for Translational Sciences.

The Ellis Island Medal of Honor, sponsored by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, is presented annually to Americans who have maintained strong ties to their ancestry and furthered the growth of ethnic America. Previous honorees have been outstanding Americans who have worked in government, healthcare, industry, education, sports and entertainment. Recipients have included six United States Presidents, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Rudy Guiliani, Jay Leno, Yogi Berra, Muhammad Ali and Walter Cronkite.
