Going green is good for area economy
Abstract:
Nanotechnology: An emerging technology that is revolutionizing society involves nano particles. These extremely small-scale particles measure from 1-100 nanometers (nm), whereas a human cell is about 7,000 nm in diameter. Below 100 nm, materials assume different properties. For example, insulating materials become conductive, insoluble substances become soluble, and colored materials become transparent.
Products incorporating nanotechnology range from sunscreen and bandages, to bacteria-killing clothes washers and hospital equipment.
Students at the Rochester Institute of Technology's Center for Nanolithography Research are working with the semiconductor industry to produce 26-nanometer image resolution for use in microchips. Public and private research and development related to nanotechnology exceeded $2 billion last year, and by 2008 about $150 billion of nano-enabled products will be sold. Nanotechnology will account for 10 million jobs and about 20 percent of the global economy by 2015.
