Abstract:
"Spring cleaning" is the time to mop the floors, dust away the cobwebs, and re-paint the walls. But, in the wake of renewed public attention to the effects of global warming triggered by former Vice President Al Gore's Oscar award-winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," cleaning that is environmentally-conscious is more popular than ever. With some new products entering the market, it's even easier (and smarter) being green.
One such product is called Nansulate HomeProtect. The brainchild of Stuart and Laurie Burchill, this husband and wife team with a knack for science have created something unique. "Nansulate HomeProtect is a totally green, water-based nanotech coating that can conserve energy, protect your home and family from new and existing mold, lead poisoning, and insulate your home - keeping it cool in summer heat waves and warm in winter freeze," says Stuart Burchill, Founder of Industrial Nanotech.
Homeowner Marc Izzard of Truth or Consequences, NM, was very concerned about energy consumption and green building and was looking for a way to insulate his home with an environmentally friendly product that would save energy. Nansulate HomeProtect fit the bill. "I'm really pleased with the 40% savings in energy cost and the swiftness at which it (the house) cools off and heats up. You could heat that house with a votive candle and a blow dryer now," said Izzard.
While being "green" is so important, for Laurie Burchill protecting her family is also important. "There are so many people - adults and their children - who suffer from mold-related illnesses," says Laurie Burchill, co-founder of Industrial Nanotech. "It's in homes, in the schools, day care centers - the mold could be anywhere and you may not even know it. This is where I think Nansulate HomeProtect can have the most meaningful impact for parents and their families."
Potentially Harmful Antimicrobials Saturate Market
Unlike most mold-resistant products, Nansulate HomeProtect is free of potentially harmful EPA-registered anti-microbials which kill fungus. According to the Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, antimicrobials play an important role in public health and safety. However, they also involve risks of potential efficacy failure and exposure hazards.
Antimicrobial products contain about 275 different active ingredients and are marketed in sprays, liquids, concentrated powders, and gases. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that approximately one billion dollars each year are spent on antimicrobial products. More than 5000 antimicrobial products are currently registered with the EPA and sold in the marketplace.
Nansulate comes in a clear coat and a tintable topcoat. It is available at Pathmann Paints and online at http://www.nansulate.com where you can find a handy square-foot converter to determine how many gallons you need for your home.
