In Silicon Valley, tech economy strengthens despite strains elsewhere

Economists also point out that the valley's portfolio of industries is now more diverse, with start-ups in biotech, nanotech and "clean tech." Semiconductor-industry stalwarts Applied Materials and Cypress Semiconductor are now branching into solar power.
The valley isn't creating jobs nearly as fast as it did in the dot-com heyday. In late September 2000, unemployment in Santa Clara County fell to a microscopic 1.7 percent.
"We lost 200,000 jobs and only got 50,000 back, so we've kind of paid our dues," said Stephen Levy, director of the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy in Palo Alto. "From this point going forward, our economic basis is well-positioned. Innovation is still really important, and serving global markets is exactly where you want to be."
