Nanotechnology Respiratory Risks
Abstract:
Constrained by a small budget, the Nanotechnology Research Center (NTRC) of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has nonetheless produced 70 peer-reviewed papers since 2004 in areas such as hazard identification and characterization, exposure assessment, risk assessment, and risk management. This work is summarized in a recent NTRC publication, Progress Toward Safe Nanotechnology in the Workplace.
NIOSH is the federal agency shouldering the primary responsibility for assessing potential risks to workers from nanomaterials in the workplace, protecting the safety of workers from this emerging technology, and implementing a strategic plan to promote methods to safely advance the technology through workplace controls and safe handling procedures. The possible use of nanotechnology to mitigate workplace health and safety risks is also being explored by NTRC.
