Nanotech Northern Europe Conference Brings the Field's Leaders to Finland

Helsinki, Finland | Posted on March 27th, 2007

n three years, Nanotech Northern Europe 2007 has grown to become one of the leading European events in the field, bringing over 650 experts from 40 countries to Helsinki, Finland on 27-29 March.

Participants at Nanotech Northern Europe include top scientists of the field, as well as a number of leading international companies interested in nanotechnology, such as BASF, Bayer, DuPont, Intel and Nokia. In total, 70 companies will participate in the exhibition, congress and surrounding events. Nokia is an event partner of Nanotech Northern Europe for the third time.

"Nanotech Northern Europe has, in three years, grown to become one of the most significant European events in the field. This success is based on the event's ability to attract high-level researchers and experts to the event, in addition to industry representatives and investors," said event director Pekka Koponen.

The exhibition features examples of nanotechnology-enabled products, such as Montreal hockey sticks, Amer's Wilson tennis rackets, a dirt-resistant suit by Turo Tailor and nGlass coloured glass plates.

The key themes for this year's event are application opportunities from nanotechnology, commercial development and safety. Application areas include new solutions for electronics and photonics, utilisation of nanomaterials and nanobiotechnology. The congress also addresses the challenges and opportunities in commercialising nanotechnology.

The key speakers of the congress include the first Finnish-born winner of the Japan Prize in Science, Professor Erkki Ruoslahti; Dr. Tapani Ryhänen, Head of Nano Sciences Laboratory, Nokia Research Center; and E. James Prendergast, Chief Technology Officer, DuPont Electronic & Communication Technologies.

Professor Erkki Ruoslahti is a world-leading scientist in the field of cell biology and nanomedicine. Prof. Ruoslahti was awarded the 2005 Japan Prize for his work that is utilised, for example, in advanced cancer treatment. Ruoslahti is a professor at the Burnham Institute in California and has active connections to the scientific communities both in the US and Finland.

Tapani Ryhänen, Head of Nano Sciences Laboratory, Nokia Research Center, will outline the possibilities that nanotechnology offers to the electronics sector, as well as Nokia's nanoscience research strategy in collaboration with leading universities in the world.

E. James Prendergast, CTO, DuPont Electronic & Communication Technologies, emphasizes the importance of an integrated science perspective in driving innovation with materials at the nanoscale. DuPont is exploring how nanoscale science and engineering can add value in a number of applications, enriching the options available to materials scientists to meet current and future market needs.

In Finland, the number of companies active in the nanotechnology sector has more than doubled in just two years. The reasons behind the fast growth and future perspectives are uncovered in the survey "Nanotechnology in Finnish Industry", published on 27 March at Nanotech Northern Europe.
