Land of rising sun on the rise
Abstract:
From mobile Internet technology to ubiquitous computing, robotics, solar power and nanotechnology, Japan is at the leading edge on many fronts, thanks to a reinvigorated and well-supported Japanese industrial system, says Carin Holroyd, senior research fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
"Since the bursting of the Japanese 'bubble,' Western commentators have consistently underestimated the level of innovation and creativity in Japan," Ms. Holroyd said in a recent report for the foundation that will form the basis of her new book, Innovation Nation: Japanese Science and Technology in the 21st Century. "To the degree that few observers have credited, the Japanese government made a formidable commitment to basic science and technology research, rapidly expanding its level of support and priority for this internationally competitive field."
