The Canadian NanoBusiness Alliance is pleased to inform you that the Consulate General in New York and Boston in collaboration with Industry Canada have announced a new business development initiative to assist early stage nanotechnology companies and start-ups to establish cross border partnership in the highly active Northeast nanotechnology markets (encompassing the New England and Tri-State areas).

US Northeast Nanotechnology Company Partnering Initiative

As you are aware, sustained government funding of nanotechnology research has led to many discoveries that have enabled science-based entrepreneurs to found numerous promising small companies in Canada. Successful product introduction and commercialization typically requires partnerships across the supply chain and new sources of substantial funding. Considering that more then a billion dollars of federal R&D investment in nanotechnology in the U.S. has given rise to new nanotechnology clusters, it is beneficial for our early stage nanotechnology companies interact with potential strategic partners and investors to ensure growth and sustainability. The Consulates conceived of this initiative to extend the exploration across the southern border and provide new opportunities for our nanotechnology companies.

The main objective of this initiative is to offer direct assistance in mentoring, coaching and matchmaking to early stage or start-up enterprises employing 3 to 50 people, with technical products that are at least in the beta testing stage; these are general guidelines, and there is flexibility to meet specific needs. The program will accommodate 10 to 15 small companies. It will run in the first half of calendar year 2007. The participating fee for this initiative is a US $1,000 contribution. Business/technology consultants in the USA, retained for the purpose will review the participating companies' plans for this initiative and help connect them with potential new partners across the border.

Participating companies will be encouraged to join partnering missions in New York in mid-April (in conjunction with the US NanoBusiness Alliance Conference, April 15 to 17, 2007, http://www.nanobusiness2007.com ) and in Boston in June (in conjunction with the 5th New England International Nanomanufacturing Workshop, June 19-20, 2007 at Northeastern University's Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing). The program will pay the registration of one attendee from each company.

The expected direct results from this mission are at least 2 strong contacts per participating company and a better understanding of the Northeast market in nanotechnology as well as the latest trends in technology research and development and potential investment through a strategic partner or investor. The anticipated outcomes will be at least three partnering/collaborations and financing of at least two early stage companies or start-ups.
