Helsinki, Finland | Posted on March 18th, 2007The use of nanotechnology in commercial products is growing rapidly. For example, the number of Finnish companies actively utilising nanotechnology has more than doubled in just two years. The expert discussion challenges that companies face in this extremely fast pace of developmen and how important it is to take into account issues of environment, health, safety and corporate responsibility.
The two safety workshops are arranged by the European Nanotechnology Trade Alliance (ENTA), VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and Spinverse Consulting, the lead organizer of Nanotech Northern Europe.
"Safety, above all else, should at the heart of nanotechnology development plans", stated Del Stark CEO of ENTA. "We must be responsible custodians of this exciting branch of science and ensure a fair framework that enables the EU to compete effectively on the world stage."
"Nanotech Northern Europe is a leading nanotechnology event in Europe and we see safety as a very important topic of the congress", Pekka Koponen, Managing Director of Spinverse said. "ENTA has a valuable role to play in the discussion on responsible nanotechnology development".
Nanotech Northern Europe is the largest Nanotechnology event in the region. Arranged now for the third time in Helsinki Finland, the congress brings together over 500 experts, industry representatives and investors from 40 countries. The parallel exhibition includes over 100 innovative companies.

Degussa regards nanotechnology as an opportunity to help develop new products and efficient scientific and technological solutions, and so make essential contributions towards environmental protection, health and product quality.
Dr Terry Wilkins, NanoManufacturing Institue (NMI) University of Leeds
NMI's objective is to undertake fundamental and applied research focusing on the problems of scale-up and high throughput manufacturing of nano-enabled consumer products.
Stephan Schaller, triple innova and Nanometer developer
Nanologue's overarching objective was to help establish a common understanding concerning social, ethical and legal aspects of nanotechnology applications and to facilitate a Europe-wide dialogue among science, business and civil society about its benefits and potential impacts. The Nanometer allows researchers and product developers to carry out a brief societal assessment of nanotechnological applications prior to market release.
Christoph Meili, Die Innovationsgesellschaft
To meet new challenges, Die Innovationsgesellschaft and TÜV
SÜD have developed CENARIOS®, the first certifiable nanospecific risk management and monitoring system. The system will be implemented by mid 2007 with Buhler PARTEC.
