Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship Announces the 2007 Rice Business Plan Competition Semi-Finalists

The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship recently announced the teams selected to compete in the annual Rice Business Plan Competition (RBPC), the largest and richest intercollegiate business plan competition in the world. The 2007 Rice Business Plan Competition will take place on March 22-24, 2007 and offers more prize money, more teams competing, and more judges than any other business plan competition in the world. This year, more than $300,000 in total cash and prizes will be awarded at a the Awards Banquet on Saturday night, March 24, 2007 at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston, Texas.

Business plan submissions were received from teams representing top-ranked graduate universities from around the world. Examples include business plans related to novel and innovative approaches for diagnosing and treating breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, presbyopia, glaucoma, and pre-term labor. Other teams will present hybrid fuel technology, ways to better detect e-coli bacteria, improved oilfield seismic technology and advance robotic applications.

Of over 140 submissions, the following teams were selected as semi-finalists:

Brad Burke, Managing Director, Rice Alliance said, "This year's field of competitors is the toughest ever in the seven-year history of the Competition. Simply being accepted as a Semi-Finalist can be considered a success, especially this year. It will be harder than ever for our judges to select the winning company."

The competition's grand prize is valued at over $175,000 and includes a $100,000 equity investment, $20,000 cash and over $55,000 of business services including office space, marketing support, and business mentoring.

Total Competition prizes are valued at over $300,000, including the $100,000 equity investment, individual cash prizes of more than $100,000. Every Semi-Finalist Team that participates at the competition is guaranteed to take home prize money. Separate cash prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Sustainability, Energy, Life Science, Information Technology, and Medical Devices. This year's competition will unveil the Dow Sustainability Award, a $20,000 cash prize awarded to the team with the best business plan that supports one or more of Dow's 2015 Sustainability Goals.

The competition will allow 36 of the world's top MBA/graduate schools to compete in front of a judging panel of over 150 venture capitalists, investors, and business executives. Through the mentoring and networking, numerous past competitors at the Rice Business Plan Competition have gone on to successfully launch their companies, raise funding, and build their businesses.
