Meehan has been key UMass-Lowell backer in Congress
Abstract:
Last year, Meehan, D-Mass., and Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., were able to secure a $2 million earmark in the Defense Department budget for a nanomanufacturing research program involving the school and Army research labs. The funds are part of a multi-year $15 million project.
Meehan graduated cum laude from the university in 1978 and also has a law degree and master's degree from Suffolk University. He said the school "is on the verge of being one of the premier research and development campuses in the country," citing the school's work in nanomanufacturing.
The aim of nanotechnology in the commercial world is to develop new products and materials by changing or creating materials at the atomic and molecular level. Nanotechnology materials, which can be as small as one-millionth the width of a head of a pin, are already being developed for use in drugs, foods, cosmetics and medical devices.
